About the Workplace Charging Scheme
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based government initiative run by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). It provides businesses, charities, and public sector organisations with financial support to install electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints at their workplace premises.
Eligible applicants can receive up to 75% of the total installation cost, capped at £350 per socket for a maximum of 40 sockets across all their sites.
This scheme is available in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The WCS can be used in conjunction with the EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets but not for the same chargepoint.
Grant Eligibility
To qualify for the WCS, your organisation must:
- Be a registered business, charity, or public sector body in the UK (excluding Channel Islands and Isle of Man)
- Declare a current or future need for EV charging (EV ownership not required)
- Have dedicated off-street parking for staff and/or fleet use
- Have the authority to install charge points or landlord permission
- Not exceed the maximum aid limit under:
- De minimis aid: €200,000 over 3 fiscal years
- Minimal Financial Assistance (MFA): £315,000 over 3 fiscal years
You must provide a Companies House number, VAT registration number, or business rates bill to verify your organisation.
How to Apply
The process is straightforward:
- Apply online via DVLA: Apply for WCS
- Receive your voucher: Successful applicants will be emailed a unique voucher code (valid for 180 days)
- Install your charge point: Choose an OZEV-authorised installer and complete the installation
- Installer claims the grant: They will apply to OZEV for reimbursement
- Pay the balance: You only pay the amount not covered by the grant
- Keep your documents: Retain all related paperwork for 3 years in case of an audit
Note: Installers may not charge you upfront for the grant amount. It must be deducted after reimbursement by OZEV.
Installer Responsibilities
Only OZEV-authorised commercial installers may install and claim under the WCS. They are responsible for:
- Conducting a site survey
- Supplying OZEV-approved charge point models
- Meeting minimum technical and warranty specifications
- Submitting your voucher claim before the expiry date
For a full list of approved installers, visit the OZEV website.
Manufacturer Responsibilities
Chargepoint manufacturers must:
- Ensure their products meet OZEV’s minimum technical specification
- Provide a 3-year on-site warranty
- List approved models with OZEV for inclusion in the scheme
Manufacturers are also responsible for ensuring any smart functionality complies with data protection and interoperability standards.
