The Better Energy Homes Scheme offers homeowners an opportunity to enhance the energy efficiency of their residences through grants. Administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), this scheme extends its benefits to landlords and individuals with multiple properties as well.
Rules and Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for grant funding, certain criteria must be met:
Eligible Works: Homeowners must undertake at least one of the following improvements:

- Roof insulation
- Wall insulation (e.g., cavity wall, internal dry lining, or external insulation)
- Heating controls upgrade
- Installation of heating controls
- Solar heating
- A Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment after the energy-saving work is completed
- Use of Approved Contractors: Utilize contractors approved by SEAI. You can find them here.
- Compliance with Standards: All work must adhere to SEAI’s Code of Practice and technical specifications.
- Property Eligibility: Dwellings constructed before 2006 are eligible.
- Materials and Products: Newly fitted materials and products must be used.
- BER Certification: Obtain a BER assessment after the completion of energy-saving work, utilizing assessors from SEAI’s National Register here.
Certain conditions may disqualify applicants from receiving grants, such as:
- Installing a boiler with less than 90% efficiency without accompanying heating controls.
- Non-compliance with standards.
- Previous incentivization of the same measure under another grant program.
Home Renovation Incentive
In addition to the Better Energy Homes Scheme, homeowners may also qualify for tax credits under the Home Renovation Incentive. Refer to the Citizen’s Information document for more details and check the Revenue website.
Rates and Bonuses
Grants are disbursed after the completion of work and contractor payment. If the cost (including VAT) is lower than the maximum grant amount, the actual cost of the work will be granted. Bonuses are available upon completing qualifying measures as outlined, with additional information provided in SEAI’s documentation.
