Dairy Equipment Scheme: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

The Dairy Equipment Scheme (DES) provides grants to farmers to facilitate dairy farmers in milk production by providing them with a level of support to meet the considerable capital costs associated with establishment of their enterprise and ensuring that they have the most up-to-date technology available to compete in the modern dairy sector.

The scheme is open to farmers who have a minimum of 5 hectares declared under the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) or the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) or equivalent in the year of application or preceding year, or in the case of intensive enterprises, generate a minimum of 20 production units from farming.

The value of the grant is equal to 40% of the eligible costs for each investment item, subject to a maximum grant amount per tranche. The maximum grant amount varies depending on the category of the farmer and the scheme applied for. For example, the maximum grant amount for young farmers under the DES is €90,000, while the maximum grant amount for non-young farmers under the same scheme is €45,00012.

To apply for the DES, farmers must provide the following documents:
  • A copy of their Tax Clearance Certificate
  • A copy of their herd number or flock number
  • A completed application form and guidance
  • A completed bill schedule
  • Evidence of completion of a Farm Safety Code of Practice or equivalent training course
  • Evidence of completion of a Basic Payment Scheme application for the year of application or the previous year
